BNI donates a ‘Shelter box’ for victims of world disasters

2005 has been unfortunately, a year of worldwide disasters, the latest being an earthquake in South East Asia as well as severe flooding in Central America. In excess of 800 Shelter boxes have already been dispatched to Islamabad, with many more following on to provide essential shelter to the victims. As a result of this year’s disaster, supplies of these Shelter boxes have been severely depleted and replacements need to be purchased urgently.

Each Shelter box provides long term shelter and warmth for up to ten people and contains a high quality tunnel-tent, plus ten high quality durable sleeping bags, together with ancillary equipment, such as multi-fuel cooker, water purification tablets, a spade and rope. Completed boxes will be assembled, numbered and held in store to be distributed as and when called for by recognised and established international aid agencies. The local chapter of BNI have donated one such Shelter Box.

Who are BNI? BNI (Business Networking International) is the largest, most successful organisation of its type in the world. There are currently over 3,750 chapters in operation, with tens of thousands of members. The Gateway to Business chapter meets regularly at the SS Radisson Hotel, Stansted Airport and has responded to the Shelter box Trust Appeal by donating in full, the cost of a shelter box (£490). Whilst BNI’s primary purpose is to promote networking across a wide range of businesses, with a view to actively passing referrals across to its members, BNI Gateway to Business, felt it was particularly pertinent to respond to the Shelter box appeal and help at a local level by providing something locally that can be used to help victims internationally.
